How Much Does Health Insurance Cost in San Antonio, Texas?
In 2026, a 40-year-old in San Antonio pays about $600 to $700 a month for a mid-level health plan at full price. A family of four pays around $2,200. But most people don't pay full price. More than 9 out of 10 Texans who buy their own insurance get help from the government that lowers the monthly bill - sometimes by a lot. What you pay depends on what you earn, how old you are, how many people you're covering, and which plan you pick.
Prices went up this year. Extra help that Congress passed back in 2021 ran out on December 31, 2025. Because of that, prices jumped about 26% on average, and families earning above a certain amount no longer get any help at all. If you shopped for a plan a couple years ago and figured your price would stay put, it didn't. That's the main reason San Antonio families are paying too much right now - or going without.
On Medicare? Part B costs $203 a month in 2026. A lot of Medicare Advantage plans here in Bexar County cost nothing extra on top of that. Supplement plans cost more each month but leave you with fewer surprise bills. Which one is better depends on your medicines, your doctors, and whether you travel.
Your doctor matters. Check that your doctor is on the plan before you sign up. That's the step people skip, and it's the one that causes them the most problems.
When you can sign up. November 1 through January 15 for most plans. Outside those dates, you can still get a plan if something changes in your life; you lose a job, move, get married, have a baby, or turn 26 and come off your parents' plan. You get 60 days from when the change happens. Medicare has its own dates: around your 65th birthday, and again every October 15 to December 7.
